In April, we have welcomed two international students studying in the Graduate School of Medicine to make presentations on their countries and researches in Medical English Class for sophomore medical students of Hokkaido University.

Alijan tells about the unique culture of his home – Uyghur, China.

The first speaker was Alijan Kader from Uyghur, China. Alijan is a Year 3 PhD student.

Uyghur is in China, and is well known for its own rich and distinctive Muslim culture deeply influenced by Russia and Europe. He has shown many pictures that look very different from China and Chinese culture that we usually know. Did you know that Urumqi is designated as the geographic Center Of Asia Continent?

Both Alijan and Delnur, his wife also from Uyghur, are studying at the graduate school of medicine.

Conscillia dressed in traditional Papua New Guinean color of red and black.

The second speaker was Conscilliah Menda from Papua New Guinea, a Year 2 Master’s student.  She dressed in Red and Black, used in the national flag of Papua New Guinea, traditional colors of many Papua New Guinean tribes. You can see the Southern Cross in the national flag, so we should be able to guess where the country is located.

National Flag of Papua New Guinea.

Thanks to a cheerful and colorful presentation by Conscilliah, we learned how much we did NOT know about Papua New Guinea. Papua New Guinea is an Oceanian country, not African. It also has the colorful and beautiful culture, and loos like a true paradise for birds.

Conscilliah says she chose to come to Hokkaido because it looked most different from her home country – a tropical island! She seems to have enjoyed her experience in Hokkaido including the winter, snow and ski. Conscilliah is going to graduate in this fall.

How wonderful that we have students from the world we are not familiar with, and have opportunities to learn about their countries, culture and many other things in Medical English Class 🙂
